A new agricultural revolution is urgently needed

Since its beginnings, humanity has faced the challenge of foraging for food, which gave rise to the first agricultural revolution approximately 10,000 years ago. This process transformed the social organization and behavior of early settlers, allowing for the development of techniques that gradually improved crop yields. However, continued population growth forced the invention of new methods, leading to the "Green Revolution." Although the latter increased productivity, it prioritized quantity over quality, unsustainably exploiting the land, water, and environment, and generating an excessive dependence on external inputs that eroded biodiversity.
Faced with these challenges, it is imperative to reexamine our means of production and restore the quality of life affected by mass food production. This talk focuses on identifying and promoting alternatives that enable environmentally friendly agricultural production, protecting the health of farmers, consumers, and the ecosystem. With a scientific and technological approach combined with sustainable practices, the aim is to revolutionize the agricultural sector, restoring the balance between productivity and conservation.
Angel Rafael Morales Astudillo is an Agricultural Engineer graduated from the National University of Loja and a leading figure in the search for sustainable agricultural methods. With a solid international education from the University of Paris XI (Orsay), where he obtained a Diploma of In-Depth Studies in Plant Breeding and a Doctorate of State in Natural Sciences, he has complemented his knowledge with postgraduate degrees in Rural Development (GRET-UNESCO, France), in the Collection, Conservation and Use of Plant Genetic Resources (Germany), as well as in Educational Computing and Multimedia Creation (University of Los Lagos, Chile) and in Biotechnology (Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain).
With over 33 years of experience in teaching and management, he served as Executive Director of AGROCALIDAD at the Ministry of Agriculture in Quito and National Coordinator of the Bio Network. Recognized with awards such as the Medal of Scientific Merit from the Municipality of Loja and the Decoration of Scientific Merit from the Ecuadorian House of Culture, Angel Rafael has advised projects for national and international organizations, publishing over 100 scientific articles and four books. His presentation at the conference promises to provide a transformative vision for rebuilding an agriculture that prioritizes quality, health, and respect for our environment.
