Ñucanchi Vilcabamba Folkloric Ballet
Founded in 2012 under the name Unión y Fantasía, the group adopted the name Ñucanchi Ecuador under the direction of Paul Ochoa, José Luis Medina, and Darío Cárdenas. In 2019, it became Ñucanchi Vilcabamba, consolidating its local identity. The ballet is currently directed by Master Segundo Espinosa.
This dance group has been a breeding ground for young talent, promoting art and culture through folk dance, with an emphasis on Ecuador's cultural diversity.
Featured presentations:
Coangue Pump – Chota Pump
Inspired by ancestral Afro-descendant knowledge, this choreography pays homage to the bomba, an instrument that represents the four elements of nature. According to oral tradition, whoever masters it harmonizes with them. Today, the bomba has been fused with various musical genres, maintaining its rhythmic and spiritual power. Ñucanchi Vilcabamba performs the Bomba del Chota as a tribute to Afro-Ecuadorian cultural resistance.
🌾 Jahuay – Harvest Song
Jahuay is an ancestral Andean chant sung in gratitude to Pachamama, Inti (the Sun), and the fertility of the earth. It is traditionally performed during the harvests, in the months of July and August, as part of the community spirit of the minga (a procession of harvests). This performance celebrates the unity, energy, and abundance that spring from the earth and collective work.
